The Spirit of Taranaki by Jane Dove Juneau
The combination of a coastline encircling a cone-shaped volcano creates a diverse landscape on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Because of its isolation from the rest of the country, the region has developed a unique identity rich in culture.
In Part One, Dove Juneau's photographs capture the essence of the landscape and natural beauty of Taranaki. They reveal the elements of wild spirit and mystery that evoke the region -- the ocean, windswept coastline, Sugar Loaf islands, the cone-shaped volcano, lahars, mountain streams, native forest, and rolling green farmland.
The images in Part Two illustrate how the moderate climate has helped create the world-renowned gardens of Pukeiti and Pukekura Park, as well as several nationally-recognised private gardens.
In Part Three the spirit of Taranaki is reflected in the architecture and arts with images of Maori culture, historic and modern buildings and rural towns.
Specific events and activities in the Taranaki environment have created a niche that sets it apart from other regions. The final section visits events like WOMAD, Hawera's Egmont A and P Show, the Multi-Ethnic Extravaganza and the ITU World Cup Triathlon.
