Books - The Sea Question

This stunning blend of poetry and photography by well-known Taranaki poet Elizabeth Smither and photographer Jane Dove Juneau borrows its title and unifying theme from one of Elizabeth Smither's poems:

The sea asks ‘How is your life now?’
It does so obliquely, changing colour.
It is never the same on any two visits.

The Sea Question explores subjects as diverse as a girl wearing red lipstick or red shoes, a cherubic baby, a beach or a storm-swept bay, the last hours of a little dog, a garden with a ghost, a roadside cross with a child’s inscription and the questioning sea itself.

Books - The Spirit of Taranaki

The Spirit of Taranaki is the latest photographic book on Taranaki by Jane Dove Juneau. Her first book of Taranaki photographs was published in 1987 with co-author's David Hill and Elizabeth Smither.

"I returned to live in Taranaki in 2003 after 17 years in the United States. It has been interesting to see New Zealand with a fresh perspective. Within the geographical environment and climate live the people of Taranaki, who have shaped the face of the countryside we now see. As a photographer, I cannot see the landscape alone without the influence of man. So within the scope of this photo essay lie the gardens, parks, farmland and architecture created by the people who live here."

"The Spirit of Taranaki was not conceived as a tour guide, but was born out of a sense of connection to the land and people that are Taranaki."
